Presentz Gift Shop
The Presentz Gift Shop is a visual present.
I was immediately attracted to the glass transom that spans the entrance facade. The triptych of translucent glass within repeating rectangular frames bathes the viewer’s eye with the warm yellow and green hues of the interior. It is an invitation to enter the shop.
The sidewalk display of gift items has the staged feel of a location camera shoot, more anodyne than one of Annie Liebovitz’s lush visual creations, but delightful nonetheless with its carpeted arrangement of colour, shape and texture.
The gift shop exudes the vibe of Grey Lynn, the suburb in which the store is located. Grey Lynn is unstudied chic, cool without edgy pretension. One essayist described Grey Lynn as follows:
The character of the area is often seen as "arty", and one of being a "traditional home to free-thinkers and anti-establishment types"1
That Grey Lynn is home to both the Auckland Buddhist Centre and the Auckland Women’s Centre is as it should be.
