Te Waikoropupū Springs
Home to the fabled Abel Tasman National Park, which contains one of the Great Walks of New Zealand, the Tasman District is located in the northwest corner of New Zealand’s South Island.
The district also boasts the Te Waikoropupū Springs, an inland body of fresh water that NZ’s Department of Conservation describes aptly as “. . . the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold water springs in the Southern Hemisphere and . . . some of the clearest water ever measured.” 1
On a recent trip to the city of Nelson, located in the Tasman District, my wife and I, along with our older daughter and her family, spent an afternoon at the Te Waikoropupū Springs. My photograph of the water does not begin to convey the haunting experience of viewing a body of water of such astounding clarity.
We were mesmerised by the surreal beauty of the springs.
