on the square with a good samaritan
Located at the northern edge of Auckland’s city centre and contiguous to the Port of Auckland, Te Komititanga Square is one of my favourite spots for people watching. Buskers are equally fond of the square.
Nearby cruise ships dock for the Auckland port-of-call, ensuring that tourists traverse the square on their way to the high-end shops at the northern boundary of Queen Street. The Waitemata (Britomart) Train Station, the background building on the right in this image, is located at the east edge of the square. The Auckland Ferry Building is also within close proximity. Tourists and locals alike keep the square busy.
On a regular basis I go to Te Komititanga Square to practice my craft as a street photographer.
I was standing at the western edge of the square on the afternoon that I captured this photograph. I had noticed that someone had carelessly dropped the top to a juice drink, and I wondered how long it would take before a good samaritan would bend down to collect the refuse. I was ready when today’s good citizen bent down to scoop up the litter. A woman, perhaps our good samaritan’s companion, busied herself with her own photography project, a picture of the entrance to Commercial Bay
