Square at St Patrick's Cathedral
The Cathedral of St. Patrick and St. Joseph serves the Catholic Diocese of Auckland in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Behind the cathedral building sits a lovely square, which has been described as an 'urban oasis.' It was extensively renovated about 15 years ago.
The public square redevelopment project was awarded a Gold Award in the Landscape Design Category, and the NZILA George Malcolm Supreme Award at the NZILA Resene Pride of Place Landscape Architecture Awards 2010.
The New Zealand Institute for Landscape Architects praised the work that led to the revitalisation of the public space. The Institute's website noted:
St Patrick’s Square is a special place in Auckland’s city centre – home to St Patrick’s Cathedral and an urban oasis offering respite from the hustle and bustle of life in the city. A full restoration of the Cathedral was completed in 2007. This, combined with a significant CBD Streetscape Upgrade Programme gave Auckland Council the opportunity to significantly enhance the existing Square and complement the newly restored Cathedral.
My image attempts to illustrate three features of the square that I most enjoy: a venerable tree; a wonderfully appointed and colourful building facade; and a striking sculpture.
